The Exhibition Hall of the Project for the Protection of Language Resources of China opened Monday in Changsha, capital of central China's Hunan Province, bringing decade-long efforts to document languages and dialects to the public through digital and interactive displays.
Located in the Hunan Museum, the exhibition brings together recordings and other language materials collected from more than 1,800 field survey sites across China. More than 30 language-related cultural relics are also on display.
The recordings represent 10 major Chinese dialects and more than 100 ethnic minority languages, including Mongolian, Tibetan, Uygur and Zhuang, said Chen Xuliang, deputy Party secretary of the Hunan Museum.
"Digital technology is helping bring the results of language preservation research out of databases and into public cultural spaces," he said.
The exhibition draws on materials collected through a national language preservation project launched in 2015 to document and preserve the country's diverse languages and dialects. It is the world's largest project of its kind, according to experts.
Over the past decade, researchers have traveled to remote mountain villages and pastoral areas to find native speakers of different ages. They systematically recorded words, grammatical examples, oral traditions and other language materials, turning oral memories at risk of disappearing in digital records that can be preserved for generations.
The work has become increasingly urgent as the number of native speakers of some languages declines.
China is home to more than 100 languages and numerous dialects. Some languages, including Hezhen and Manchu, now have fewer than 100 speakers.
Economic integration, population mobility and the social changes they bring are making it increasingly difficult to preserve languages and cultural traditions around the world, said Wang Lining, a professor at Beijing Normal University's School of Chinese Language and Literature and a participant in the language preservation project.
Many languages lack well-developed writing systems, Wang said, meaning knowledge and memories passed down orally can be lost when their speakers die.
The new exhibition aims to bring such preservation work closer to the public. It also promotes the principles of the "Yuelu Proclamation," which was officially released in 2019 and described as UNESCO's first permanent document themed on the protection of linguistic diversity.
Experts attending the exhibition's opening said a key challenge is how to use artificial intelligence and digital museum technologies to turn vast collections of field recordings into cultural experiences the public can engage with.
For Wang, documenting endangered languages is only the beginning.
"In the past, the focus was on recording endangered languages and preserving samples of their voices," she said. "In the future, preservation needs to move toward keeping languages alive."
The exhibition hall, Wang said, is part of that shift, taking language resources beyond academic research and bringing them closer to everyday life.

。本次公益帮扶精准覆盖全市长宁、普陀、闵行、嘉定、金山、宝山、奉贤、松江共8个行政区,经过信息比对、实地走访、材料核验等严谨流程,最终确定14名生活困难的残疾体彩代销者为帮扶对象。市体彩中心携手上海市体育发展基金会为每位帮扶对象发放3000元暖心公益慰问金,以实实在在的资金纾困支持,缓解残疾代销者经营与生活压力,助力他们稳定经营、安心从业。

二 | 7月16日下午,市体彩中心将这份暖心慰问送到了宝山区15244体彩网点残疾人业主伍百丽的手中。伍百丽经营的网点位于华灵路1291号,作为一名从事轮椅击剑运动长达9年、曾斩获伦敦残奥会团体项目冠军的运动员,她坦言如今的这份工作不仅让生活得到了保障,更让自己得以换一种身份参与公益,通过售卖彩票传递体育爱心,尽自己一份微薄的力量。“之前做运动员的时候,就有体彩的公益金在支持我的运动生涯,所以当我在两年多前申请下代销资格之后,我就下定决心一定要好好做。”伍百丽告诉记者,目前自己与丈夫两人共同打理这家体彩店,此次慰问金的发放,不仅为困难残疾代销者缓解了经济压力,更让基层从业者切实感受到上海体彩大家庭的温暖与关怀,“其实在日常生活中,体彩中心对我们残疾人士经营的网点就格外关心,不管我们遇到什么难题,中心工作人员都会及时协助,我们夫妻其实一直都非常感激。”恰逢2026年美加墨世界杯举行期间,伍百丽坦言小店的日常工作一下子忙碌了起来,除了自己和丈夫之外,他还邀请了一位亲戚来店里帮忙。“世界杯期间每到晚上就会迎来购彩高峰,店里至少要有两个人才能忙得过来,我们也不希望让排队购彩的彩民等候太久,尽可能让大家获得最佳的体验感。”伍百丽告诉记者,世界杯期间店里的营业额自然获得了大幅提升,但自己还是会提醒来购彩的彩民保持理性,“每次遇到大额度的购彩,我都会作出提醒,希望对方能够理性购彩,量力而行,毕竟这其中存在风险。当然,有些彩民会听,有些也不会听,但我觉得自己应该尽到这种义务。”多年来,上海体彩始终坚守公益初心,深耕基层帮扶工作,持续聚焦特殊从业群体,通过常态化、精准化的公益帮扶举措,切实为基层体彩从业者排忧解难。下一步,市体彩中心将继续依托暖心公益项目,以公益力量赋能基层体彩事业稳健发展,持续传递体育彩票的社会责任与温暖力量。
